Washi, La Doll clay

This piece is of a series of woodblock print inspired works I created when I was first starting to sculpt faces for the figures. In my early work, it was common to rely heavily on what I saw in the prints. In this scene, the woman is loading her pipe with tobacco. It was not uncommen for women to smoke. In fact, smoking was one of the most popular pastimes and was enjoyed by men, women and even children.
